Awe and Wonder

What makes you feel excited, delighted, amazed, and curious? For many, it is a discovery in nature. It reminds us how small we are and how much mystery there is yet to be discovered. Take note the next time you have a moment that makes you stop in your tracks– physically or mentally. Just experience the awe and wonder in all its fullness. Most of us can’t help but let a quiet thank you or words of praise escape our lips. It reminds me of the Double Rainbow Youtube video sensation. Do you remember that man’s delight and awe…leading to tears and questions and exclamations?

I had a beautiful reminder of awe as I was hiking in the North Carolina mountains alone one day. I came upon an overlook where some people were standing. Everyone was calmly chatting, snacking, or looking at the info sign. Most people were gathered on the left side looking down the river at the big waterfall. But then it happened….a three year old boy came stomping up the hill and rounded the corner. He did not see what was on the left side because he was directly facing the right side, where water was cascading down some nearby rocks, creating a mini waterfall. He’s eyes lit up and grew to quarter sized circles. He screamed, “Whoa!…. Wow! Look!” And ran to the railing almost tripping over his own feet.

He could not stop squealing with delight and amazement. People who had not even noticed this small waterfall were all turning around to see what he was talking about. Most of them shrugged like it was no big deal, just a nice background, because they had seen so many of these before. But this was his very first time! He stared incredulously and with no concern of making a spectacle. He started giggling with pure joy. And it was contagious! I couldn’t stop myself from joining in the laughter and delight. The energy that radiated from him buoyed me up as if I were floating on bubbles.

And that is the beauty of awe and wonder. Not only does it fill you with gratitude and joy, but it radiates to all around you–bringing them along for the ride! I encourage you to try a day of looking at the world around you through the eyes of a 3 year old. Believe that lovely surprises are waiting for you around the bend if you take the time to see.
