“Everyday God is showing you that you are loved in 10,000 ways. And we are lucky if we notice 1.” A spiritual director told me this once. And when she said it, I knew immediately that it was true. How often do I listen to the people sitting across from me and hear God’s love in their stories, but they still do not recognize it? Perhaps that is why people are always preaching about gratitude and counting our blessings. Once we put our attention there, once we arrive each day with the expectation to be blessed and loved, we begin to see it all around!
I would like to invite you on the God of Surprises Challenge. Each day, you will be challenged to record at least one way that God has surprised you. And I am speaking of surprises like a birthday present… a package filled with joy and delight. If you go into each day with the attitude that God is going to gift you something, you may be quite surprised by the what and the how. It could be that the perfect pair of jeans, the last pair on the clearance rack, is just your size, or maybe it could be a timely phone call from an old friend. But I like the funny surprises too…like randomly spotting this tree root that looks like a hippopotamus!
Whenever I set out with the intention to receive a pleasant or joyful surprise, I am never disappointed. We are surrounded by love all the time…perhaps that is why we don’t notice it. It’s like the fish who can’t find the ocean because he is surrounded by it. I invite you to take a dip into that ocean of love around you and see what treasures you can pull out.
