“Well, it’s just sad to be cut down relatively young, still full of things to offer the world. It’s super sad.” I was listening to Dave McOmie, on a This American Life episode, telling about cracking open the iconic Prince’s vault shortly after he died. As I listened, I couldn’t help but compare Prince’s vault to his heart. He had locked away his deepest treasures there. What lay inside was the perfect description of who Prince was at the core.

You see, inside his vault were endless shelves of cassette tapes containing all the songs that he had created for decades! He had shared some of those songs with the world but many were unfinished or unpublished. It took one of the greatest safecrackers in the world to break through without actually harming anything. Dave McOmie grew emotional as he spoke about this experience. His interviewer voiced what Dave couldn’t say, “…it was like you were there in the presence of all the stuff he hadn’t finished“.

This made me think about how many creative gifts we all carry in our hearts. How many of them are we hiding, just waiting for the right time to share or the right person to crack us open without harming us? Will we offer the world what is deep in our hearts- our perspectives, our half-baked ideas, our passions- or will we lock them away because we haven’t perfected them yet?

Let me ask you this: If you were to have a vault that you left behind to the world when you die, what would it contain? What are you prolifically growing inside of you right now?

Whatever it may be, I can’t wait to see you share it with the world!
