When’s the last time that you let nature speak to you? Sometimes you have to really get out into it for an extended to stay to quiet the other voices that are vying for your attention.
Last week, on my retreat to the mountains, I had an experience with a rock. Yes, I said a rock. You may be wondering why I needed to go into the mountains to find a special rock when rocks are everywhere! Perhaps it was that I had to be saturated with a sea of rocks along the riverbank. When you walk along a river, you can’t help but notice all the shiny and colorful rocks along the edge.
So here I was, nonchalantly walking by the river and a rock caught my attention. I thought to myself that I should intuitively choose a rock to take with me, but it couldn’t be this one. This one was too big, too gaudy! So I searched for other smaller rocks that were interesting. Yet each of those rocks that I found felt like they were for someone else. I collected them as gifts for others but then I still felt drawn to the first big rock that had caught my eye. So I asked myself, “Why can’t you take that one? What is the message in that rock for you?” And then it struck me: I didn’t believe that I deserved it, that I had a right to it. Why take something bigger than you need? And it wasn’t something you could hide in your pocket…everyone would see it. They would see that I had taken it. Who was I to be bold enough to take something that big for myself? And then I realized the message was about abundance. I was not only allowed, but I deserved to have beautiful things. I didn’t have to hide my big desires from the world. I am allowed to need and want more. It doesn’t make me selfish, and by having more, doesn’t mean that others will have less. These were old limiting beliefs that I could now let go of. And I got that all from a rock.

Let my experience encourage you to step out into nature today and see what messages are waiting for you. And if you are in the Charlotte area, sign up for The Retreat at The Farm at Mintwood that I will be hosting in September. It will provide a chance to get away for a day and listen to your inner voice.
