Black light curtains drawn, temperature turned down to 65 degrees, and white noise blanketed the room….still I tossed and turned like a sailboat in a storm. My brain wouldn’t shut off, cut off, or lay off. Anxiety had crept in and taken hold of me with the evil intent to imprint dark circles under my eyes.
I did all the things you are supposed to do for good sleep. No screen time at least an hour before bed, no caffeine in the afternoon, make sure to exercise, drink some warm calming tea with cream, and go to bed at the same time each night. But as anyone who has had anxiety can tell you, sometimes it just takes over.
What do you do when you wake up in the middle of the night and cannot go back to sleep? Read a book? Get something to eat? In the past, I have had luck using the Insight Timer app to listen to a guided meditation. But on this night, even that didn’t work. Then I remembered…”Julie, you are an energy practitioner, doggone it! So try what you suggest to clients… a self mind-clearing!” And that’s what I did.
A few simple placements of my warm hands on my neck, head, and cheeks and suddenly my anxious thoughts had ceased. I felt the warm gooeyness of sleep blanketing me and blissfully drifted into the no man’s land of my subconscious.
